Jo Gray, a self-proclaimed "sky watcher", paints records of the shifting signals of the sky over land and water.
Her images are translations, often abstracted from the range of forms and exhilarating colors of nature's daily performances. Nacreous iridescent evenings and glowy mornings are the makings of Jo's radiantly distinctive palette. Through her paintings she seeks to understand the symbolic, emotional and descriptive roles of color. Views from her waterside studio in Sea Cliff, combined with memories of travels out west and abroad fuel these dreamy images. Ms. Gray has employed a variety of mediums in the works shown here including: encaustic, oils, acrylic, spray paint, collage and precious metals.
Jo works out of her Sea Cliff studio, Waterside. Her landscape paintings are a departure from her original passion, printmaking, a medium she has studied and explored since her MFA studies in the early 1990's. Ms. Gray has shown her work widely over the last thirty years in galleries and shows all over Long Island and New York City. Her print work is currently for sale at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, NY.
Waterside Studio is a hop skip and a jump from the beach! In the warmer months you will find Jo painting in plein aire at the water's edge with her students circled around. She holds space for students ages 4-104 to engage in the creation of art and exploration of their imagination. After a teaching career in The North Shore School District for 27 years, Jo has developed a repertoire and style in her teaching that allows all of her students to enjoy success in their art making experiences.
Dr. Charles Riley, former director at the Nassau County Museum of Art and art critic wrote:
