I have always been fascinated with the natural image and the majesty that our planet holds, many of its forms being a product of human intervention while simultaneously existing as a greater entity outside of human life.
The fixed laws of nature intertwined with mankind’s cohabitation within these spaces inspires my work, how our relationship of giving and taking can alter the ways in which we view the world. Through collection of history and material, as well as my own lived experiences, I attempt to navigate the ways in which we interpret the greater forces that are ever-present around us. I am intrigued by the symbolic meaning some of these natural forms can take, and how the application of such associations can affect our own personal narratives. My practice is centered around the use of natural material and its manipulation to investigate these ideas, featuring felting, printing, and analog photographic processes to develop a coherent aesthetic throughout a body of work. As many of these processes are durational and are not instantaneous, my practice also serves as a reflective moment to consider these forces at work, and how they may translate into the image I am creating. I hope to explore these boundaries further in the continuation of my work, as well as developing a stronger visual language to communicate these sentiments of awe and reverence.
Julia Lanotte is an emerging interdisciplinary artist and recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, based in fiber and material studies, printmaking, and analog photography, as well as receiving training at institutions such as the Fashion Institute of Technology, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Rhode Island School of Design. Exploring composition through the physicality of the resources she uses, Julia often works in multiple iterations across her three main media, translating her content between materials to create more intricate and visually appealing pieces. An appreciation of nature and fine arts compels her craft and inspires her to develop pieces that evoke moments of tranquility and inquisitiveness.
